Is necessity truly the 'mother of invention'?
After the immediate human suffering has been
eased and the medical emergencies stabilized how
will they rebuild?
Could 'Earthship Biotechture' be a substantial help in rebuilding
some of the poorest, hard-hit areas of Haiti?
In Michael Reynolds' DVD 'Garbage Warrior' he and a small
group of 'alternative architects' go to India's Andaman Islands,
where they proceed to show the locals there how to make
a hut-like structure using available discarded plastic bottles and
tin cans, and cement after the Asian tsunami of 2004.
A structure that has self-contained well-water discouraging
contamination, inherent ventilation, and made from
materials readily available that everyone can
work together to build.
It seems this would be another opportunity to show how
critical it is to be able to react quickly and responsibly
to structural devastation- something bigger, richer,
more bureaucratic countries are completely unable
to achieve in the face of disaster. Katrina proved just
how inept a government response can be.

or look for them on facebook
I think their sites are currently being inundated
with traffic so it may take a few trys!
Read the excellent reviews for 'Garbage Warrior' and get it!
If for no other reason then to see how hard it
is to get legislation to allow for a testing place for those
interested in alternative building methods- a disturbing
look into our ineffectual legislative process!!!!
