I apologize because presently I don't have enough time to
give this post the attention it deserves ....but I also didin't want to
leave too much 'space' between this and the recent 'wooden
tool handles' postings. Since I'm not well-educated in deforestation
and/or harvesting practices and can't rattle off the facts without
a little research I'm sending you to these informative links..
One from rainforestrelief.org * (scroll down to the Wall Street Journal
article-10/07)- director Tim Keating's 'op-ed' follows that article -and
a piece fsc-watch.org just posted last week regarding the short-
comings of FSC certification and the problems that can stem from
the absence of /or difficulty in negotiating, agreeing upon, enforcing
and/or supporting national and international standards.
Please check these links out to get a better understanding as to
why pure avoidance of certain species may be critical when
standards aren't properly in place or aren't enforced.
Also at fsc-watch.org are fresh(2/27) comments by people better
informed than I regarding what's going on with a seemingly major
failure of the FSC in Ireland.
*www.rainforestrelief.org is currently in the process of
updating some info on their website....
